2011-2012 Classes

AMERICAN STUDIES (Teacher: A. Stanford)
The American Studies course integrates the disciplines of history, literature, philosophy, theology, and government of America from the Age of Exploration to the turn of the 20th century. (Modern American Studies is covered in the Modern World History course offered in 2012.) Utilizing both traditional Christian textbooks and the Great Books approach, students will read history books, primary historical documents (including the founding documents of the United States government), and American literature, and will learn to evaluate ideas in the light of a Christian worldview.

Meeting times for lectures and group discussion:
Monday and Wednesday afternoons: times TBD.
Reading and writing assignments will be completed independently at home.

Cost: $550 per student ($275 per semester). Offered for grades 7-12. Sibling discount available.

*** High School Students will receive 1 American history credit, .5 government credit, and a .5 English credit—-combine with Composition I (or your own writing component) to earn a full English credit.


COMPOSITION I (Teacher: A. Stanford)
This writing class is suitable for beginning and intermediate writers. Using materials from the Institute for Excellence in Writing and the Lost Tools of Writing, students will progress from writing short essays from key word outlines, to creative projects, research reports, critiques, and formal essays with thesis statements. Additionally, students will be introduced to the classical canons of Invention, Arrangement, and Elocution. Weekly grammar review and vocabulary are also integrated in the class.

Writing topics will be coordinated with the American Studies course, but enrollment in American Studies is not required.

Class meets once weekly with writing assignments to be completed at home.
Class Time: Wednesday 3:00-4:15 pm. (time is tentative)

Cost: $400 per student ($200 per semester). Offered for grades 7-12. Sibling discount available.
(If a student registers for Composition I and American Studies, the price for Composition I is discounted to $300 per student.)

*** Combine with American Studies (or other literature course) for a full high school English credit.
